Arguably the fact that New Zealand’s match with Afghanistan was lost to the weather was a bigger blow to them than to their opponents. It was a match they were expected to win, and, had they done so, it would have consolidated their lead at the top of the group.

They had earned that by they beat the hosts and defending champions Australia in the first match of the tournament making 200/3 from their 20 overs and then bowling out the home side for just 111.

That 89 runs win gave them momentum and they will be scared that may be lost after a day spent in the pavilion.

Sri Lanka have enjoyed mixed fortunes in Australia to date. In the first group matches, they were upset in their opening match by Namibia, before rebounding with wins over the UAE and the Netherlands, enabling them to top their group in the end.

And they began their Super 12 campaign with a resounding 9 wicket win over Ireland, another group qualifier, by 9 wickets, a result that gave a healthy boost to their Net Run Rate.

However, they were brought back down to earth again by the hosts Australia, losing by 7 wickets in Perth. The match revealed shortcomings in their batting – too many loose shots cost batters their wickets, but also bowling. They had nobody able to restrain Marcus Stoinis once he got going.

They will need to tighten up all aspects if they want to progress.

Although they began the World Cup as one of the dark horses to win it for the first time in their history, New Zealand’s form going into it has not been that good. They were beaten at home by Pakistan in the final of a tri-nation series that also featured Bangladesh, and they lost heavily to South Africa in a warm-up game.

Whilst the win over Australia was more than welcome, the size of the win took many commentators by surprise.

Sri Lanka (Form)

Inconsistent is the best word to describe Sri Lanka. How else to sum up a team that lost their opening match in the Asia Cup heavily, but then won five consecutive matches to win it, beat India once and Pakistan twice in the process.

That form has continued into the World Cup, with their fans uncertain which version will turn up on any given day.

About the Match

The fact that Afghanistan’s match against New Zealand was abandoned without a ball being bowled on Wednesday, has had the effect of compressing the group, and has made qualification for the knock-out stages more of a lottery.

One win and a team previously seemingly out of contention can be back in it again.

That is certainly the case with the Afghans, who made a disappointing start to the tournament against England, when they were bowled out for 112, although their bowlers made the English batters work for their win.

Against New Zealand they definitely would have started underdogs, but, with another two days until they play again, they will benefit from the extra rest and time on the practice field.

Ireland have acquired the reputation as the competition’s giant killers. In the first group phase their defeat of the West Indies eliminated the twice winners from the tournament early.

Arguably, though, what they did on Wednesday against England topped that.

They had been here before, famously upsetting their neighbours in the longer form World Cup in 2011.

But this was a performance to rival that. After being put into bat and losing an early wicket, their second wicket pair of Andrew Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker shared a stand of 82 that threatened a very big total, until the English bowlers appeared to wrest control of the match back by taking that last nine wickets for the addition of just 54 runs.

However, the English reply began badly when they lost their skipper Jos Buttler, arguably the best T20I batter in world cricket for a second ball duck and wickets fell regularly as the scoring rate dipped below the required rate.

When the rain in Melbourne brought a premature end to the game, Ireland were five runs ahead at the same stage of the match and they could celebrate a famous win.

Afghanistan (Form)

Following that loss to the Irish the Afghans had travelled to the Asia Cup, where they made a strong start to the completion, beating both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh to top their group. But their form deserted them, and they lost all three games in the Super Four state of that tournament.

Nor have performances been very encouraging since touching down in Australia. They lost their first warm-up game with Bangladesh and their second with Pakistan had to be abandoned because of the weather.

Ireland (Form)

It is difficult to know which version of Ireland will turn up in this tournament. Is it the team that lost their opening match to Zimbabwe, or recovered to beat Scotland and the West Indies?

That inconsistency has continued into the Super 12s.

Although they will be celebrating that win over the English, they should not forget how they lost to Sri Lanka in their opening match. Nor should they ignore how the middle and order collapsed in Melbourne.

Whilst they might argue that they were unlucky in that they might have won had not rain intervened, in reality they only have themselves to blame, after another poor batting display.

Earlier their bowlers had seemed to wrest back control of a match that was slipping away from them, reducing Ireland from 103/1 t 157 all out.

But with early wickets falling, their batting was tentative at best, and, when the rain fell they were still five runs behind the required rate.

That win against the Sri Lankans notwithstanding, Australian form has been patchy of late with series defeats against India and England sandwiching two wins against the West Indies, The fact that the West Indies have already been eliminated from the tournament puts those victories into context.

The team, to date, has been less rather than more a sum of its parts.

Whilst England appeared to be in good form on the eve of the competition win series wins against both Pakistan and Australia under their belt, there were warning signs of what was to come in their first group game against Afghanistan.

Again their bowlers had done a good job of restricting the opposition scoring, their batters made heavy weather of chasing down a modest target and they only won by five wickets in the end.

Now their failings with bat, and, to a less extent, ball, have landed them in trouble. They have put themselves in a whole and they need to dig themselves out of it.

New Zealand’s attempt to win the World Cup for the first time could hardly have stated better. The odds seemed against them when they were drawn to play the defending champions and pre-tournament favourites, Australia, in the opening match of the tournament.

Prior to that they had been on the wrong end of a series whitewash by the West Indies in the Caribbean, and, although they beat Bangladesh were beaten twice in a tri-nation series by the other team in it, Pakistan.

The Afghans too have enjoyed mixed form recently. They beat Zimbabwe but lost an away series in Ireland (a team they will play in this group on October 28^th, by the odd match in five.

They began their Asia Cup campaign well and won their group, only for that form to desert them in the Super Four stage of the competition, and they did not win another game. They did beat Bangladesh in a warm-up match, but a second against Pakistan was lost to the weather.

And then there came that defeat to England.

One lesson they will have learned from that is the importance of holding on to catches. They will also know that their batters have to cope better with the pressure in the death overs.

England will be hoping that they are coming into form at the right time, after a summer of struggles when they appeared to initially struggle to the transition of captain form Eoin Morgan to Jos Butler.

Winning a best of seven series in Pakistan on their first visit to the country for 17 years helped inject some belief, and they have continued their progress since they arrived in Australia, defeating the hosts on their home patch and beating Pakistan again in another warm-up game.

Ireland have a problem with consistency as they showed prior to the tournament, where the only nation they have beaten in a T20I series this year was Afghanistan at home. As they proved against the West Indies, they are more than capable of a big result on any given day, but find it much more difficult to string a sequence of wins together, perhaps because there is not yet the strength in depth in Irish cricket available to other nations.
